When I asked Bernell Grier what advice she would give to the next generation of changemakers she replied, “Hope and faith in change” instantly, but after reflection and a smile she added “And a big mouth.” Born in Harlem in 1955, she moved to Brooklyn when she was 25 years old. Spurred on by her parents and an encouraging 3rd-grade teacher, she pushed herself to work in the banking industry. However, once she saw how the loans she authorized rarely benefited people like her, she knew what she needed to do. Bernell completed her day job with over twenty years of volunteering, eventually changing her career path. She became the leader of Neighborhood Housing Services NYC and later of IMPACCT Brooklyn.
What followed was a dazzling second career of twenty years of tireless work to assist members of her community. From designing programs to help homeowners fight foreclosure, and restarting the development of income-targeted affordable housing; to building programs to help families and small businesses during COVID-19. Bernell Grier is a superstar of community development. More importantly, she never turned her back on the next generation, always taking time to mentor the youth.
After over 50 years in the industry, she stepped down as the Executive Director of IMPACCT in March of 2024, although she admits she will never be able to stop her efforts. Bernell should be a model to us all for her unwavering dedication to her community, something we can all agree our world needs more of.

Cuando le pregunté a Bernell Grier qué consejo le daría a la próxima generación de agentes de cambio, respondió “Esperanza y fe en el cambio” de inmediato, pero después de reflexionar y con una sonrisa, añadió: “Y una boca grande”. Nacida en Harlem en 1955, se mudó a Brooklyn cuando tenía 25 años. Animada por sus padres y una maestra de 3er grado, se esforzó para trabajar en la industria bancaria.
