Brooklyn Book Bodega

Seema Aghera and Rebecca Cohen are the co-founders of the Brooklyn Book Bodega, a non-profit organization that provides free children’s books to families, teachers, and other members of the community who do not have access. Each is a mother of three children, and Rebecca was also a middle school teacher, so they have a firsthand understanding of the power of books to change lives.  They describe their organization as a “large tent,” extending to thousands of people each year through volunteer work, partnerships with local bookstores (like Greenlight Bookstore on Fulton Street) and public libraries, and, of course, the donation of books. In 2022 alone, they held sixty-two public programs centered in the neighborhood and donated over one hundred thousand books.

Their organization, which started in Ingersoll Community Center (NYCHA) and has now moved its operations to the navy yard, was able to build important connections and serve people from all walks of life because of its base in the multicultural neighborhood. They seek to share books in which children will see their stories represented, and which will create windows through which children will be able to see out into and explore different worlds. By sticking to their core values, Seema and Rebecca have been able to overcome the challenges that beginning a new nonprofit presented to them and build what is truly a community organization through which literacy and book access in Fort Greene and on a larger-scale are becoming as commonplace as the bodega on your corner.
