Mary Fowler was a humble activist and a leader in her neighborhood, born on September 7th, 1926. An accommodating and kind person towards everyone, she was a potent fighting machine as a Christian mother of 13 kids and 75 grandchildren. She was a community activist who laid the foundation for future tenant association presidents of Ingersoll Houses, and a legend of the Houses too.
Her daughter, Debra Fonville–Ortiz, remembers her mother’s 40 years of her community work creating programs for recovering drug addicts, introducing summer activities to young people, and supporting the efforts of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. When Debra and her siblings were young, she also remembers the time Shirley Chisholm ran for president and how her mom encouraged them all to hand out pamphlets to reach out to people in the community. For Mary Fowler, helping out the community was a two-way street. When Debra asked her mother why she helped so many people her mother sat her down and told her, “I have 13 children, and if any of my children were in need, I’d want somebody to help them too.”
