Fort Greene

William Payne

Raised in the West Indies and coming to Fort Greene at an early age, William Payne is a community activist, father to three, and leader to many residents. He grew up facing a lot of discrimination due to his skin color but instead of letting this bring him down, this sparked his resilience and motivation to create change–giving a voice to people of color and learning to accept people for who they are.

Emphasizing the importance of acceptance and equality, William Payne is the vice president of the Farragut Tenant Association and advocates for residents to have a voice in their community. He believes the Farragut Tenant Association is the “focal point for the residents” and listens to and facilitates housing complaints. Determined to make changes for a higher quality of life in his community, he speaks with management and stands up for the residents. He strongly declares, “I do not accept the things that I can change. If I can make changes for the betterment of where I live, I will voice my opinion, I will suggest things, and I will make sure it gets done.” His compassionate and devoted nature brings happiness and unity to his community.

As an empathetic and hardworking person who enjoys bringing smiles to people’s faces, William Payne is a volunteer at the Farragut Food Pantry. Every Tuesday at 12:00pm, he diligently provides nutrient rich food and nourishing food options to those in need. Describing this experience, he states, “It’s enlightening. It’s a blessing that you get when you give someone something and in return they say thank you so much I needed this.” By spreading love and providing resources, his acts of kindness show the profound impact he has on his community.

Not limited to volunteering at the food pantry, William Payne is committed to volunteering as a chaplain for the veteran association. On a daily basis, he admirably dedicates his time and energy to provide comfort and support to veterans during emotionally difficult times. Although he blesses the veterans with his visitations to the sick, he sometimes “feels as if they are blessing me in return.”

All in all, William Payne is truly a remarkable Community Hero who continues working toward the betterment of his community. He speaks to youth about the value of education, respect, and standing up for yourself. He has boundless affection not only for his community but for his children and grandchildren as well!
